Scope and Content:
Kobi Karp is the CEO of KKAID, Kobi Karp Architecture and Interior Design, based in Miami, is an award-winning firm which has architectural projects all over the world. After working with a British architectural firm based on Miami Beach, Mr. Karp established his own company. In 1999, he was named Outstanding Young Architect of the Year (Miami) by the American Institute of Architects. In the interview, Mr. Karp talks about the creative excitement of incorporating and renovating vintage buildings into the enlarged architectural design, using design elements from the original building’s “DNA.” He discusses his work on restoration and expansion of the Astor Hotel and the Cadillac Hotel, both on Miami Beach, which garnered the Miami Design Preservation League Merit Award in 1996 and 2004, respectively. In the interview Mr. Karp discusses the “multiple vignettes” which comprise Ocean Drive and the importance of preservation architecture. He talks about being honored to work with Morris Lapidus, late in the famed architect’s life, on the renovation of Lapidus’ Seacoast Towers. Mr. Karp discusses his philosophy of incorporating a green consciousness of environmental elements and responsibility into all of his projects and the prospect of creating zero energy consuming buildings in the future.
