|a Ink on paper lithograph for Arbeid voor de Vrouw. The model for this important feminist poster was Marguérite Helfrich, later Mrs. Snijder van Wissenkerke, of whom Toorop made many drawings. The young woman blacksmith is surrounded by women of all social classes and surmounted by a sphinx, a motif much favoured by the Symbolists for representing the human mystery. The poster bore a band of text in capital letters at the bottom, which did nothing to enhance the drawing as such. |
