Abstract:
This study aims to augment the data collected during the initial EFA and to refine the estimation of the Reserve for the Mara River. I will collect data at reference sites throughout the Mara River Basin at regular temporal intervals for the duration of one year. I will use a hierarchical sampling approach aimed at targeting different components of the river ecosystem at different levels of scale. Fine-scale sampling will be used for water quality, which is expected to be quite dynamic; monthly sampling will be used to determine changes in the benthic macroinvertebrate community in relation to flow; seasonal sampling will be used to survey fish populations; and long-term aerial census data collected by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and water source data collected by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) will be utilized to study the relationship of terrestrial wildlife species to the Mara River. I will aim to address questions identified by the EFA specialist team and to stage sampling events at the very lowest flow levels in order to refine the estimates of the Reserve needed to sustain the Mara River.
