Abstract:
The trans-boundary Mara basin covers 13,834 Km2 and its located roughly between longi- tudes 33º47’ E and 35º47’E and latitudes 0º38’ S and 1º52’ S. The upper 65% of the area (8,941 km2) is in Kenya, while the remaining lower portion is in Tanzania. There is evidence of unprecedented land use change in the upper part of the basin with far-reaching consequences for the long-term sustainability of the natural resource base. To evaluate the effects of these land use changes on the hydrology of River Mara, a hydrological study of the basin was undertaken utilizing remote sensing and GIS tools, as well as hydro-logic modeling.
