|a The MacFarlane Homestead Subdivision Historic District is named for Flora McFarlane, a pioneer, white woman who taught both Black and white children in Miami. She became the first official school teacher in the area, was a founder of the Housekeepers Club in 1891, and was the first woman to homestead 160 acres of public land in 1892. The Coral Gables Securities Corporation bought a portion of McFarlane's acreage in 1925. The land was developed for housing for Blacks of Bahamian descent who helped to build Coral Gables. The houses in the district are primarily owner-built, 1920s and 1930s and are constructed of wood in the shotgun or bungalow styles. Highway US 1 bounds the district on the west, Brooker Street on the east, Grand Avenue on the south, and Oak Avenue on the north. This is the city’s only National Register Historic District. |
