|a Named for David Fairchild, the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has the largest collection of tropical plants in the continental United States. Fairchild, a botanist, traveled the world in search of rare plants. To support the creation of the garden, Colonel Robert H. Montgomery donated the original 58 of its 83 acres of land. Landscape architect William Lyman Phillips, who designed the gardens, worked with the renowned Olmsted partnership, designers of New York’s Central Park. The Civilian Conservation Corps worked with Phillips in the creation of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. Built in 1939 and a historic landmark, the gatekeeper's house now serves as a gatehouse museum. |
